Admission Criteria & Prerequisites

Language Prerequisite

Applicants must be able to use English or French as the primary medium of learning and instruction.

General Requirements

Must hold a secondary school diploma or equivalent, eligible by higher education standards, and show statement of results copy delivered by accredited institutions.

Specific (Science & Tech)

Engineering/Medicine require school science/technical diploma. Sciences school diploma holders must submit practice videos demonstrating hands-on laboratory courses (done at nearby Polytechnics at own cost) as a graduation prerequisite.

Transferring Your Credits to RUST

Students transferring credits from another accredited university to RUST are welcome under our credit transfer framework:

  • Credit Transfer Fee: Just pay a total of 20 Euros.
  • Required Documents: Notarized copies of transcripts, and a copy of your National ID or Passport.
  • How to Submit: Complete the application form and email transcripts and passport copies to admissions@rust.ac.rw.
  • Verification: RUST reserves the right to contact the DVC of Academics of your host university for credential authentication.

Fee & Scholarship Structure

Presidential Scholarship Scheme (80% Scholarship)

RUST is dedicated to open education accessibility. Under our 80% Presidential Scholarship scheme, eligible students pay only 20% of the tuition fee, including dissertation supervision:

Standard Merit & Need-Based Scholarship Scheme (Up to 50% Scholarship)

RUST also offers a general scholarship scheme specifically tailored for ambitious candidates from lower and middle-income countries who demonstrate financial need and outstanding academic potential:

  • Eligible Candidates: Early applicants who satisfy the core admissions prerequisites and originate from lower/middle-income nations.
  • Coverage: Grants up to a 50% tuition fee waiver, depending on candidate previous academic performance.
  • How to Apply: Please prepare and send your supporting documents alongside a formal scholarship application letter directly to admissions@rust.ac.rw.
  • Condition: Evaluation is conducted by the regional academic coordination office, and only publicly notified documents are accepted for verification.

Additional Academic, Retake & Graduation Fees

Internship & Exposure Fees

  • Engineering courses: 200 Euros (100� attachment, 100� lab practices)
  • Sciences with lab exposure: 150 Euros (100� attachment, 50� lab practices)
  • Non-Engineering courses: 50 Euros internship fee
  • Thesis / Research project supervision: 200 Euros (Masters), 150 Euros (Bachelors)

Graduation, Bridging & Retake Fees

  • Graduation Gown Fee: 30 Euros (Diploma/Bachelor/Masters), 50 Euros (PhD)
  • Retake Course Fee: 20 Euros per failed course (delaying research/thesis)
  • Registration after Discontinuation: 40 Euros per retake course (to resume study)
  • Bridging for African Diploma Holders: 240 Euros tuition + internship fee + 150� research project fee

Standard Fee Structure (100% Rate)

  • Bachelor Degree Programs: 1,200 USD total.
  • Master's Degree Programs: 2,000 USD total (2 years).
  • PhD Programs: 3,000 USD total (3 to 7 years) + 200 USD Research Fee.
  • Postdoctoral Fellowships: 5,000 USD total (3 to 5 years).
  • Admission Fee: Undergraduate & Master's: 50 USD (free for default UP scholarship candidates). PhD candidates: 60 USD (non-refundable).

ECTS Credit & Workload Framework

RUST adopted international European Higher Education Area (EHEA) standards to maintain robust credit transfer pathways globally:

  • Bachelor Degree Program: Cannot go below 180 ECTS depending on the context.
  • Master's Degree Program: Standard consists of 90 or 120 ECTS credits.
  • Doctorate/PhD Program: Covers 180 to 420 ECTS credits (representing 3 to 7 years of research/study).
  • 1 ECTS Unit: Equal to 25�30 hours of student workload.
  • AI Usage Policy: Artificial Intelligence usage in research and writing is capped at 20% to 30% of total content.

Official University Refund Policy

RUST implements a clear, structured tuition refund scheme for none credit transfer students based on written notice timeline:

Full Refund (10 Days Written Notice)

If written notice is received within 10 days of receiving study materials, and no academic progress is made. Cost of textbooks, modules, and coaching assistance is deducted.

Partial Refund (10 to 90 Days Notice)

Deducts 20% of the total tuition fee for the degree program plus a 300 USD Evaluation Fee for each academic work submitted.

Partial Refund (3 to 12 Months Notice)

Deducts 50% of the total tuition fee for the degree program plus a 300 USD Evaluation Fee for each academic work submitted.

No Refund (After 12 Months)

No refund is allowed after 12 months from the date of receiving study materials or after completion and submission of the required academic works.

Schedule & Semesters

Admissions at RUST are always open. We operate on a rolling Spring and Fall semesters scheme organized into four sub-semesters:

Sub-semester One

Jan 6 to March 28

Consolidation works and exams follow immediately after.

Sub-semester Two

April 5 to July 31

Consolidation works and exams follow immediately after.

Sub-semester Three

August 10 to October 16

Consolidation works and exams follow immediately after.

Sub-semester Four

October 25 to Dec 31

Consolidation works and exams follow immediately after.

Graduation Dates

Graduations are celebrated twice a year on November 4th and May 31st.

Fee Clearance Deadlines

Deadlines for graduating students are October 30th and May 27th.
